The fund never does outstandingly well, but it also very seldom loses money. Over time, my initial investment has done surprisingly.

This book should not surprise anyone who has read Tweedy Browne’s shareholder letters, but it does a great job of synthesizing Tweedy Browne’s investment philosophy, while also providing more in-depth discussion of how to research stocks and understand financial statements. It explains how hedge funds work, and the explanation is clear enough that a lay person can understand. It even suggests a few specific securities to consider as «starting points» not recommendations in your search. I bought the book because it was written by Ben Stein.

My first impressions of this book was a little disappointing because I thought it was just a remedial lesson on the do’s and don’ts of typical investing. However, the investment advice was good. As the book went on, the book mentions how to build a bulletproof portfolio. The theory behind the bulletproof portfolio was pretty convincing even in this harsh time of beaten-up muni’s but good time for stocks.

He is well-educated and has decades of experience in investing. All his opinions are supported by research; some are quite surprising, hence the title of this book. I’ve followed his column in «Forbes» for a couple of decades and he is almost prescient in his predictions of macro situations.

I suppose the proof of his wisdom is the fact that he is a billionaire and very wealthy people trust him with their money. I would recommend this book to any interested person.
